Choose a sunscreen that suits your skin.
Why we have to protect our skin from UVA and UVB?
Ultraviolet (UVA) rays can penetrate deep into the dermis, the inner layer of the skin or the true skin, which causes changes in elastin fibers, skin colors and blood vessels that could result in the aging of the skin (wrinkles) and skin cancer.
UVB causes burns and a black stain on the skin.
Most sunscreens that are sold in the market can only prevent UVB. So, we should carefully choose a sunscreen that can prevent us from both UVA and UVB rays. Besides, SPF on the label is also important.
What is SPF?
SPF stands for sun protection factor. It uses to measure how much and how long of a sunscreen can prevent the skin from sunburn. For example, Sunscreen with an SPF 20 means it will protect your skin from the sunlight up to 300 minutes or 5 hours.
How to choose and use sunscreen.
- Choose the type that protects against both ultraviolet (UVA) and (UVB)
- Has an SPF of at least 15
- Evenly and gently apply thick sunscreen, about the size of a quarter cent coin, across the face.
- Leave it on for 15-20 minutes before you go out in the sun.
- Repeat every 2-3 hours
TIPS:
- If you plan to do outdoor activities, for a better and long-lasting protection, remember to choose a water resistant sunscreen. So, when you sweat or being exposed to water, it will not be washed out and still maintain the SPF to protect your skin from UVA and UVB.
- Avoid direct exposure to the sunlight. You could bring umbrella, put on a hat, and wear clothes that cover most parts of your skin when possible.
